Tip # 30
(Editing) RAW IMAGE COLOR ADJUSTMENTS SCREEN
You can bring up the "RAW Image Color Adjustments" by RIGHT-clicking in the main image and selecting the top pop-up menu item "RAW Images Loading Quality". You can also click on the main menu's "VIEW" menu. Then clicking on "RAW Images Loading Quality". These menu items are normally disabled, unless you are currently viewing a RAW image.
Once you have the adjustments screen displayed, you have several choices. If you want special settings, click on the "Use Custom Settings" checkbox. You are then able to change the following items.
Auto Brightness: Controls the highlights. You can select from the following:
Auto Brightness (Burn Out Possible)
NO Auto Brightness (Darker, no burn outs)
Auto brightness is the typical setting. No auto brightness adjusts the image darker so that highlights are not lost(burned out to white). This is most useful when you need detail in clouds that have become solid white or basically anything that is so bright that it's a solid white color.
Set Black Point: Typically you would not use this option. But if you wanted to make the image have a darker appearance, you can set a black point value to a higher number. It doesn't really make the image darker, it actually determines where the contrast midpoint is. Anything above that point is made brighter and anything below that point is made darker. Play with it and you'll see its affect.
NOTE: The more pinkish the image turns out, then the black point is set too low. The more greenish, then the black point is set too high.
Not all of these settings will affect all images. Some camera's RAW format do not support the customization of all of the above settings.
FAST Real Time Adjustments:
These allow you to PLAY with various settings like Brightness and Contrast and Gamma to get the image just the way you want it real fast. When you click on the "Adjust Image In Real Time", then all of the sliders become active. You can then slide them around and SEE the effects in real time in a image window that you can drag around to scroll around to see the whole image.
NOTE: The settings at the top part of this window are disabled during your real time adjustments.
Noise Reduction: Default is NONE . As you increase the value, the amount of smoothing increases on the grainy parts of the image. Nice for improving grainy night time photos. Or for improving HIGH ISO grain.
Color Balance Settings: Auto Color Balance, Camera Color Balance, No Color Balancing.
Color Space: Controls the color space of the image. sRGB is default and best for normal use.
Color Multiplier Factors: These values normally are set to zero. If you don't like the way the "Color Balance" option balances your image, you can set these multiplier factors to change the coloration of the image.
RED: This is the Red multiplier used for the image
GREEN: This is the Green multiplier used for the image
BLUE: This is teh Blue multiplier used for the image
GREEN: This is the second Green multiplier used for the image. Some cameras use this second Green channel because they have 2 sets of Green. While other cameras just have one Green channel.
Load Camera RGBG Values: This button will do something nifty. You can select a "Color Balance" option, and then click on this button, all the multipliers will be set to what multipliers were used to achieve the selected "Color Balance" option. This way you can SEE what the default multipliers are for the image. You can then modify to your liking.
NOTE: These multipliers can ONLY be edited if your "Color Balance" is set to "No Color Balancing". This makes sense because if you choose "Auto Color Balance" or "Camera Color Balance", then you are asking for the color to be balanced automatically, thus ignoring these RGBG values.
NOTE: These multipliers can be set to ZERO and then the decoding will be handled in a default way. If you want to see how the image would appear using custom multipliers, then just set all the values to 1 . And then you probably won't like the results. You can then change the values higher or lower. Like 1.52, 1.001, 0.897, 1.0.
TIP: As you type values into these fields, the program will wait about 1 second and then it will show you the results in the image. That way the image won't change the instant you start to edit a field ;)
HINT: FOVEON / SIGMA *.X3F images do NOT make use of these multipliers and as such, you will NOT see these options.
The various sliders are:
Contrast: Controls how contrasty the image appears. Dark areas become darker and light areas become brighter.
Brightness Adder: Controls how bright the image appears. The whole image becomes brighter by the same degree because the brightness is ADDED to all the pixels.
Brightness Multiplier: Controls how bright the image appears. The image becomes brighter, but in a different way. Bright areas become much brighter and medium bright areas become moderately brighter and dark areas just get a little brighter. This is because the brightness level of each pixel is multiplied by this slider's multiply factor.
Gamma: Controls the gamma of the image. Gamma is a curve that is applied. The more you slide it to the left, the dark areas become much brighter and the bright areas become a little brighter. This keeps the near white areas from becoming burned out As you move the slider to the right, the bright areas become darker. The reverse of sliding to the left.
While you are adjusting, if you are curious as to what the DEFAULT settings would produce, you can checkmark the "Use DEFAULT Settings" checkbox. When you are done adjusting, just click on the "Stop Adjusting" button. Then you can either "Apply" the changes and "Close Window". OR, you can "Close Window" without applying the changes.
Action Buttons Descriptions
Apply:
This saves your settings for the particular camera's make & model. That way, in the future all RAW images loaded of the same make & model will have your custom settings applied. When you click APPLY, the main Photo Jockey window will reload the image and show you the results of your changes.
NOTE: Any custom settings you make will be forgotten the next time you run Photo Jockey. This is so that you don't make a dumb setting (like brightness set to 0.25), and then wonder a few days later why your photos are comming out so dark.
Close Window:
Closes this window and does NOT save the settings for the camera's make & model.
Defaults:
Sets all settings in this window to their default settings.
Help:
Displays this help topic.
NOTE: Once you have set the settings, any RAW image(s) you drag and drop and select to JPGConvert will be processed with the new settings. Also, Contact sheets and Web-Page creation will use these new settings. So, basically, everywhere RAW images are used, these new settings will be used too.
TIP: If you have RAW images from several different camera models, each model will have it's OWN adjustments settings. That way your settings for a Canon EOS D3 can be different from your settings for your Fuji Pro 2 which would be different from your Canon EOS Rebel.
