Tip # 117
(Technical Info) PNG IMAGE FORMAT

Photo Jockey supports many
graphic file formats. PNG is just one of them. PNG is one of the 4 formats (*.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, *.png) that you can use to SAVE your images in.

The cool thing about the *.PNG file format is that it's a LOSSLESS format. This means that you do NOT lose quality when you save an image in the *.png format. This is different from the *.jpg format. JPG files lose quality when you save them, ALTHOUGH if you pick a quality setting of 97%, you should NOT be able to detect this minor degradation in quality.

BMP format is also lossless, BUT the saved images are HUGE in comparison to the JPG format. So, here comes the *.png format to the rescue. PNG files are lossless AND they are about 1/2 or 1/3 the size of the same photo saved in a BMP format. Of course JPG files would be even smaller, like 1/12th the size.

The beauty of *.png is that if you are not saving a photo, but instead you are saving line art or bar charts or things with a lot of solid colored areas, then the PNG format saves you even MORE than the *.jpg format.
